Chen’s research focuses on civic engagement and governance in authoritarian as well as democratic countries. In particular, she examines how different civic engagement methods such as digital crowdsourcing, online discussion forums, deliberation and mini-publics influence government’s capacity to collect reliable information from citizens and to facilitate informed citizenship. Chen combines experimental, ethnographic and computational methods with large-scale data sets on political activity in the United States, China and West Africa to examine these questions. |
