Personal bio
Carl Djerassi, emeritus Prof. of Chemistry, is one of the few American scientists to have received both the National Medal of Science (for the first synthesis of an oral contraceptive) and the National Medal of Technology. Aside from 26 hon. doctorates, he has received numerous awards and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society (London) as well as various other academies. For the past 23 years, he has turned to literature and has since published 5 novels, 9 plays (which have cumulatively been translated into 18 languages), a collection of poems, short stories and an autobiography as well as a memoir. He is the founder of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, an artists colony near Woodside, which provides residencies and studio space for artists in the visual arts, literature, choreography, and music. Over 2000 artists have passed through that program since its inception in 1982 |
