SOMGEN 288: LitMed: Conversations on Structural Violence and Systemic Racism in Medical Practice

Racism is a public health and health crisis. This reading seminar examines the intersection of race and racism with medical care, drawing on historical, anthropological, sociological, public health, and clinical perspectives. This seminar aims to analyze ongoing system racism that exists in current medical practice, equipping students with the concepts and framework to analyze, discuss, and respond to structural violence and systemic racism and to critique the role of race in clinical practice and medical education. This course hopes to create a community of learners who together understand and critically appraise the structural violence and systemic racism in medicine and to enact change in their personal practice.
