GERMAN 216: Visual Culture in Modern Germany (GERMAN 316)

Modern Germany is filled with stunning examples of visual culture. Weimar films, postwar design, comic books, and satirical magazines stand out as particularly engaging materials for studying Germany since unification. But how do we approach visual material, and what can it illuminate that we cannot uncover in written sources? Through class discussions, readings, and assignments, students will refine their skills in working with visual material. Students with and without a background in visual material are welcome. Taught in English; no knowledge of modern Germany is required.
