FEMGEN 397: Core Colloquium in South Asian History (HISTORY 397)
This graduate colloquium is a foundational and intensive introduction to the field of South Asian history. It will engage with some of the major areas of research on South Asia (especially the modern period), the major conceptual frameworks deployed by historians, as also the new and emerging areas of research in the field. Each week we will discuss one overarching historiographical theme. These themes will include a) Colonialism, the Great Divergence, and the History of Capitalism in South Asia; b) Sovereignty and its Layers Empires, States and Localities; c) Knowledge and Power; d) Environmental History; e) History of Science, Technology and Medicine; f) Subaltern Studies; g) Feminist History and the Study of Gender and Sexuality in South Asia; h) Caste and Anti-Caste Resistance; and i) Intellectual History.
