CLASSICS 102G: Advanced Greek: Demosthenes' Philippics
Demosthenes (384-322BC) was an ancient Athenian orator who is famous for giving speeches to warn Athenians about Philip II of Macedon's expansion and threat of invasion. We will read selections from his orations, focusing primarily on the third Philippic, and we will discuss the significance of text in the broader context of historiography, Athenian rhetorical training, military history, gender and social roles, hegemony, Demosthenes' subsequent suicide, and cross-cultural literary receptions including Cicero's Philippics (read in translation). We will use the text to review Greek grammar and syntax with a view to transitioning students from Intermediate Greek to fluent reading of Attic prose. Classics majors and minors may repeat for credit with advance approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
