PHIL 24S: Environmental Ethics

Do we have moral obligations to animals? To trees? To ecosystems? If so, whatngrounds these moral obligations? What role does appreciation for nature play in a morally good life? Do we have a duty to preserve the environment for future generations? What are our ethical responsibilities as individuals when it comes to collective action problems like climate change?nIn this class, we will look at various approaches and answers to these questions. We will also discuss concrete issues like: climate change, consumerism, GMOs, overpopulation, ecoterrorism, environmental racism, loss of biodiversity, the extinction crisis, etc. Students will be encouraged to discuss, question, and defend their own views on these topics.
