GLOBAL 194: Understanding China's Rise (SOC 175, SOC 275)

This course is an overview China's national trajectory since the 1980s, and will place its historic economic advance in comparative perspective. We will examine the factors that made this advance possible, explore the ways that China's political and economic institutions are different from other major economies, and consider challenges that now appear to threaten China's continuing economic advance. Same as OSPBEIJ 20. Students may not earn credit for both OSPBEIJ 20 and Sociology 175/275.

OSPBEIJ 20: Understanding China's Rise

This course is a survey of China's economic trajectory since the 1980s. Students should finish the course with an understanding of the following issues: In what ways is China's rise historically unprecedented, and in what ways not; What explains China's remarkably rapid China's economic rise; How do China's political institutions guide its economy; How does the structure of China's economy differ from virtually all others; What current challenges will shape China's future? NOTE: OSPBEIJ 20 is the same as -Sociology 175/275/ Global 194-. Students may not earn credit for both.
