HISTORY 296L: The Worlds of Labor in Modern India (ANTHRO 196F)

This colloquium will introduce students to the exciting and expanding field of Indian labor history and provide them a comprehensive historiographical foundation in this area of historical research. Seminars will engage with one key monograph in the field every week, with selected chapters of the monograph set as compulsory reading. In these seminars, we will explore the world of the working classes and the urban poor in colonial and post-colonial India, as also the Indian labor diaspora. We will understand myriad workplaces such as jute and cotton mills, small workshops, farms and plantations. We will also explore forms of protest and political mobilization devised by workers in their struggles against structures of oppression and in their quest for a life of dignity. Most importantly, these seminars will train students in the methods deployed by labor historians to access the lives of the largely unlettered workers of the region who seldom left a trace of their consciousness in archival documents. Overall, we will connect the debates in the history of labor in modern India to wider discussions about the nature of capitalism, colonial modernity, gender, class, caste and culture.

HISTORY 297G: Rulers, Reformers, Radicals: History of India in Two Centuries

This course traces the cultural, religious, literary, and political lineages of India during the last two centuries. It investigates the conditions and impact of colonialism in the formation of the contemporary subcontinent. In doing so, the course examines the ways in which Indians changed their society, culture, and identities as they became entwined with colonial, imperial, and global forces. Over the course of the quarter, we will address the following questions: What was the nature of colonial rule in India? How did the process of colonization shape questions of gender and class, race and caste in India? In societies as diverse as India, is anticolonialism synonymous with nationalism?

HISTORY 297T: Time and History in South Asia (HISTORY 397T)

This course explores key concepts and themes around the temporal cultures of South Asia, with an emphasis on the transition from the middle ages to modernity. We will study the philosophical/scientific understandings of time and history in South Asia, and how the West read (or misread) these temporal traditions. Topics include: the philosophical debates around cyclical and linear time; the development of historical thinking outside Europe; the impact of colonialism on medieval understandings of time and history; the challenges to our sense of 'future' due to the current climate crisis. The goal is to think of South Asia not merely as subject to Western epistemologies and temporalities, but also as an important site where our current concepts and propositions about time and history were developed.

HISTORY 298C: Race, Gender, & Sexuality in Chinese History (ASNAMST 298, CSRE 298G, FEMGEN 298C, HISTORY 398C)

This course examines the diverse ways in which identities--particularly race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality have been understood and experienced in Chinese societies, broadly defined, from the imperial period to the present day. Topics include changes in women's lives and status, racial and ethnic categorizations, homosexuality, prostitution, masculinity, and gender-crossing.

HISTORY 298E: Chinese Pop Culture: A History

This discussion course examines the evolution of popular culture in the Chinese-speaking world and diaspora from the late imperial era to the present. Analyzing myth, literature, medicine, music, art, film, fashion, and internet culture will help students understand the revolutionary social and political changes that have transformed modern East Asia.

HISTORY 298F: Social Movements and State Power in China, 1644-Present

This discussion course investigates the ideological, political and environmental conditions that have shaped social movements, uprisings and governance in China from the late imperial period to the present. It considers differences between the experience of social movements, the portrayal of social movements and the memory of social movements, as well as evolving approaches to wielding power.

HUMBIO 2B: Culture, Evolution, and Society

Introduction to the past, present, and future of human biological and social structures. Topics include the evolution of hominids and the origins of human diversity, the development of agriculture and the modern state, human population growth and global demographic change, patterns and consequences of inequality, and conclude with a discussion of our place on a rapidly changing planet. HUMBIO2B, with HUMBIO3B and HUMBIO 4B, satisfies the Writing in the Major (WIM) requirement for students in Human Biology. HUMBIO 2A and HUMBIO 2B are designed to be taken concurrently. Lectures in the two courses will address related content from complementary perspectives, so as to enhance understanding. Concurrent enrollment is strongly encouraged and is necessary for majors to meet recommended declaration deadlines. Human Biology majors are required to take the Human Biology Core Courses for a letter grade.

Research and theory on human behavior, health, and life span development. How biological factors and cultural and educational practices influence cognition, behavior, and health across the lifespan. Introduction to research methods, including study design, statistical analysis, and causal inference. HUMBIO 4B, with HUMBIO2B and HUMBIO 3B, satisfies the Writing in the Major (WIM) requirement for students in Human Biology. HUMBIO 4A and HUMBIO 4B are designed to be taken concurrently. HUMBIO 29: Introduction to Global Health

The class is an introduction to the field of global health. It focuses on resource-poor areas of the world and explores how human health is affected by poverty, international policy, planetary health, economic development, human rights, and power imbalances. We will examine global health from broad perspectives: historical, cultural, political, demographic, economic and biomedical. The course is intended for students interested in human health, international relations, and technical and social strategies to improve health worldwide. Students will have opportunities for in-depth discussion, presentations, and interaction with experts in the field. Because of the breadth of material to be covered, issues presented in class will be supplemented by independent student research and selected required readings.

HUMBIO 82A: Qualitative Research Methodology

This course introduces students to core concepts and methods of qualitative research. Through a variety of hands-on learning activities, readings, field experiences, class lectures and discussions, students will explore the process and products of qualitative inquiry. This course is designed particularly to support Human Biology undergraduates in designing, proposing and preparing for Honors Thesis research; students may use the course assignments and office hours to support individual research needs (e.g., proposal design, IRB protocol, pilot work).
