CSRE 131A: Introduction to Queer Theory (FEMGEN 131, FILMEDIA 131)

What can Queer Theory help us do and undo? Emerging at the intersections of feminist theory, queer activism, and critical race studies in the 1990's, Queer Theory has become a dynamic interdisciplinary field that informs a wide range of cultural and artistic practices. This course will introduce students to the development of queer theory as well as core concepts and controversies in the field. While considering theoretical frames for thinking gender, sexuality, and sex, we will explore the possibilities--and limitations--of queer theory with a focus on doing and undoing identity, knowledge, and power.

CSRE 131B: Jews, Race, and Ethnicity in French Cinema and Literature (FRENCH 102, JEWISHST 131)

How does an officially colorblind country engage with its (in)visible minorities? In a country such as France - which espouses an assimilationist, as opposed to a "melting pot" ideology - one's national belonging is said to transcend their religious, racial, and ethnic particularities. As such, assimilating to a secular, universal model of Frenchness is considered key to the healthy functioning of society. Why might this be so, and has it always been the case? In this class, we will explore this and related questions as they have been articulated in France and the former French Empire from the Revolution through the twenty-first century. Via close study of literature, cinema, and still image, we will (a) examine how the universalist model deals with racial, religious, and ethnic differences, (b) assess how constructions of difference--be they racial, ethnic, or religious--change across time and space, and (c) assess the impact that the colorblind, assimilationist model has on the lived experiences of France's visible and invisible minorities.

CSRE 132: Whose Classics? Race and Classical Antiquity in the U.S. (ASNAMST 132, CLASSICS 132)

Perceived as the privileged inheritance of white European (and later, American) culture, Classics has long been entangled with whiteness. We will examine this issue by flipping the script and decentering whiteness, focusing instead on marginalized communities of color that have been challenging their historic exclusion from classics. We will read classical works and their modern retellings by Black, Indigenous, Chicanx and Asian American intellectual leaders and explore how they critique classics' relationship to racism, nationalism, settler colonialism and imperialism. Readings include Sophocles' Oedipus Rex alongside Rita Dove's The Darker Face of the Earth, Euripides' Medea alongside Luis Alfaro's Mojada, Sophocles' Antigone alongside Beth Piatote's Antíkone, and the selections from the Homeric Odyssey alongside Ocean Vuong's Night Sky with Exit Wounds.

CSRE 133E: Literature and Society in Africa and the Caribbean (AFRICAAM 133, AFRICAST 132, COMPLIT 133, COMPLIT 233A, FRENCH 133, JEWISHST 143)

This course provides students with an introductory survey of literature and cinema from Francophone Africa and the Caribbean in the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will be encouraged to consider the geographical, historical, and political connections between the Maghreb, the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa. This course will help students improve their ability to speak and write in French by introducing students to linguistic and conceptual tools to conduct literary and visual analysis. While analyzing novels and films, students will be exposed to a diverse number of topics such as national and cultural identity, race and class, gender and sexuality, orality and textuality, transnationalism and migration, colonialism and decolonization, history and memory, and the politics of language. Readings include the works of writers and filmmakers such as Aim¿ C¿saire, Albert Memmi, Ousmane Semb¿ne, Le¿la Sebbar, Mariama B¿, Maryse Cond¿, Dany Laferri¿re, Mati Diop, and special guest L¿onora Miano. Taught in French. Students are encouraged to complete FRENLANG 124 or successfully test above this level through the Language Center. This course fulfills the Writing in the Major (WIM) requirement.

CSRE 139: Refugees, Race and the Greco-Roman World (ASNAMST 139, CLASSICS 139)

Who is a refugee and who gets to decide? How does race impact who is welcomed into a new community and who is turned away? And what does the Greco-Roman world have to do this? This course will explore these questions by surveying different forms of forced displacement in and beyond antiquity through the lens of Critical Race Theory and Critical Refugee Studies. We will examine how forcibly displaced people were portrayed and treated in ancient Greece and Rome and investigate how racialization contributed to xenophobic immigration policies as well as imperial agendas. We will then evaluate the impact of ancient discourses of forced displacement on the modern world, with a focus on American immigration policies. Understanding that refugees are not objects of investigation, but are powerful knowledge producers, we will also engage with works created by refugees throughout the course.

CSRE 140S: Casablanca - Algiers - Tunis : Cities on the Edge (COMPLIT 236A, FRENCH 236, FRENCH 336, HISTORY 245C, JEWISHST 236A, URBANST 140F)

Casablanca, Algiers and Tunis embody three territories, real and imaginary, which never cease to challenge the preconceptions of travelers setting sight on their shores. In this class, we will explore the myriad ways in which these cities of North Africa, on the edge of Europe and of Africa, have been narrated in literature, cinema, and popular culture. Home to Muslims, Christians, and Jews, they are an ebullient laboratory of social, political, religious, and cultural issues, global and local, between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. We will look at mass images of these cities, from films to maps, novels to photographs, sketching a new vision of these magnets as places where power, social rituals, legacies of the Ottoman and French colonial pasts, and the influence of the global economy collude and collide. Special focus on class, gender, and race.

CSRE 142: The Literature of the Americas (AMSTUD 142, COMPLIT 142)

This course will focus on identifying moments of continuity and discontinuity in the literatures of the Americas, both in time and space. We will look at a wide-range of literatures of the Americas in comparative perspective, emphasizing continuities and crises that are common to North American, Central American, and South American literatures, from the colonial period until today. Topics include the definitions of such concepts as empire and colonialism, the encounters between worldviews of European and indigenous peoples, the emergence of creole and racially mixed populations, slavery, the New World voice, myths of America as paradise or utopia, the coming of modernism, twentieth-century avant-gardes, and distinctive modern episodes in unaccustomed conversation with each other.

CSRE 146S: Sound Tracks: Music, Memory, Migration (MUSIC 146S)

Music records racial and ethnic histories. How can critically listening to the musics of diasporic and migratory peoples attune us to the processes of identity formation, racialization, and self-understanding? In this course will gain deeper insights into how communities have used music to respond to the challenges of migration and minoritization under ever-changing nationalist frames. As we listen to musics from the Romani, Jewish, African, and Latinx diasporas, we explore how race, ethnicity, identity, heritage, nationalism, minoritization, hybridity, and diversity are refracted through sound. WIM at 4 units only.

CSRE 149: The Laboring of Diaspora & Border Literary Cultures (COMPLIT 149, ILAC 149)

Focus is given to emergent theories of culture and on comparative literary and cultural studies. How do we treat culture as a social force? How do we go about reading the presence of social contexts within cultural texts? How do ethno-racial writers re-imagine the nation as a site with many "cognitive maps" in which the nation-state is not congruent with cultural identity? How do diaspora and border narratives/texts strive for comparative theoretical scope while remaining rooted in specific local histories. Note: This course must be taken for a letter grade to be eligible for WAYS credit.

CSRE 151D: Migration and Diaspora in American Art, 1800-Present (AMSTUD 151, ARTHIST 151, ARTHIST 351, ASNAMST 151D)

This lecture course explores American art through the lens of immigration, exile, and diaspora. We will examine a wide range of work by immigrant artists and craftsmen, paying special attention to issues of race and ethnicity, assimilation, displacement, and political turmoil. Artists considered include Emmanuel Leutze, Thomas Cole, Joseph Stella, Chiura Obata, Willem de Kooning, Mona Hatoum, and Julie Mehretu, among many others. How do works of art reflect and help shape cultural and individual imaginaries of home and belonging?
