This Sustainable Societies Lab (SSL) explores the history, challenges, and opportunities of selected models of Israeli-Arab cooperation and pathways to peace. SSL students/fellows will explore how Israel and Arab states have pursued and can further dialogue across differences to achieve cooperative ends on key sectors. Throughout the quarter, students will develop an understanding of models of regional cooperation in key areas such as water/energy/food security, economic development, healthcare innovation and policy, and security/defense technologies. To build a framework for these models, this course will explore areas of previous bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the Middle East, previous peace negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbors (including Palestine and Jordan), the role of external players such as the US and Saudi Arabia in facilitating cooperation, and the future of cooperation, partnership and collaboration in the region. Students will have the opportunity to hear from and dialogue with former top-level US and Middle East government officials and civil society leaders and innovators who have played a role in facilitating multilateral cooperation, negotiating peace agreements, and shaping policy and innovative initiatives in the Middle East for societal well being. Course guests will include (subject to change) the Jordanian, Israeli and Palestinian co-leaders of EcoPeace Middle East, Pulitzer Prize winning author, New York Times journalist and MidEast expert Tom Friedman, former MidEast peace negotiator Ambassador Dennis Ross and Washington Institute for Near East Policy Distinguished Fellow and former Palestinian Authority advisor Ghaith Al-Omari, and additional domain experts TBA - partnered together with a notable team of Stanford faculty.
