POLECON 531: The Future of Cities

Why cities? Cities are where billions of people live and they are the engine for innovation and economic growth. They are also going through enormous change and battling with fundamental social problems, like inequality, housing, the environment, safety. A lot of the problems come from failures of government, and many of the potential solutions come from tech and from doing government better. The class will focus on this intersection. We¿ll deal with issues of tech and innovation but also good governance in the context of substantial social problems.A substantial part of the problem is that cities and tech struggle to communicate. They operate on different time lines, by different rules, and with different mindsets. Closing this gap offers the promise of significant benefit. Recently, many cities have taken steps to do this, including by appointing "Chief Innovation Officers." But there is still a long way to go.
