MUSIC 250C: Interaction - Intermedia - Immersion

This course explores creative and technical approaches to the design of digital musical instruments (DMIs) and other systems for interactive performance, composition and/or installations in audio, audiovisual, and other intermedia practice. Various paradigms of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and techniques such as motion tracking, biosignal analysis, Music Information Retrieval (MIR), concatenation, and machine learning will be considered through analysis of examples of historical and current intermedia practice, framed by key concepts such as affordances and embodiment. It will focus on individual creative output and process, with a final project consisting of the realization of a creative work applying these principles.

MUSIC 254: Music Query, Analysis, and Style Simulation (CS 275B)

Leveraging off three synchronized sets of symbolic data resources for notation and analysis, the lab portion introduces students to the open-source Humdrum Toolkit for music representation and analysis. Issues of data content and quality as well as methods of information retrieval, visualization, and summarization are considered in class. Grading based primarily on student projects. Creative design for computer music software. Programming, audiovisual design, as well as software design for musical tools, instruments, toys, and games. Provides paradigms and strategies for designing and building music software, with emphases on interactive systems, aesthetics, and artful product design. MUSIC 257: Neuroplasticity and Musical Gaming

What changes in a musician's brain after hours and years of daily practice? How do skills that make a great violinist transfer to other abilities? Can directed neuroplasticity be used to target skill learning? This course will include fundamentals of psychoacoustics and auditory neuroscience. Focus will be development of video games that use perceptually motivated tasks to drive neural change. Emphasis will be on music, linguistic, and acoustic based skills. Programming experience is highly recommended, but not required.

MUSIC 260: Transcultural Perspectives of South-East Asian Music and Arts (FRENCH 260A)

This course will explore South-East Asian (SEA) cultures and their influence on modern and contemporary Western art, particularly in France: for instance, Claude Debussy (Gamelan's music), Jacques Charpentier (Karnatak music), Auguste Rodin (Khmer art) and Antonin Artaud (Balinese theater). In the course of these interdisciplinary analyses - focusing particularly on music and dance - we will confront key notions in relation to transculturality: orientalism, appropriation, auto-ethnography, nostalgia and exoticism. We will also consider transculturality as interior to contemporary creation, through the study of contemporary SEA composers. Viewings of sculptures, marionette theater, ballet, opera and cinema will play in integral role. To be eligible for WAYS credit, this course must be taken for 3 units and a letter grade.
