BIOS 253: Discovery and Innovation in Emerging Viral Infections

An interdisciplinary mini course focused on challenges posed by emerging viruses and innovative efforts to overcome them. Modules include epidemiology and ecology of emerging viral infections, such as Ebola, dengue, and Zika, discovery of new emerging viruses, development and application of molecular assays for the diagnosis and management of emerging viral infections, bioinformatics and genetic approaches for antiviral target discovery, and novel therapeutic approaches for combating emerging viruses. It is intended for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows interested in emerging viral infections. Advanced undergraduates are also welcome. Prerequisite: background in molecular biology.

HRP 253: Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention

This course focuses on the role of epidemiology in cancer etiology, prevvention, and control. We will discuss descriptive epidemiology, including cancer trends and patterns, natural history, and biologic characteristics as well as etiology of selected cancers. the influence of environmental and genetic factors and their interplay on the development of cancer are discussed as well as methodologic issues related to investigations of these studies. Principles and problems involved in cancer prevention and screening are covered. Student evaluation is based on a brief presentation and a paper on the descriptive epidemiology of a selected cancer, and participation in class discussions.

MED 253: Applied Grant-Writing Skills for Community and Clinical Research

Skill-building in writing scientific research proposals. Topics include: grant proposal preparation; scientific literature review; developing research aims; decision-making on study design & methodology; planning statistical analyses; determining research compliances, timelines and resources. Students develop drafts of potential projects, peer-review and critique writing samples, and receive detailed feedback from instructor on all aspects of research projects.

SURG 253: Topics in Simulation of Human Physiology & Anatomical Systems (CME 520)

Biweekly interdisciplinary lecture series on the development of computational tools for modeling and simulation of human physiological and anatomical systems. Lectures by instructors and guest speakers on topics such as surgical simulation, anatomical & surgical Modeling, neurological Systems, and biomedical models of human movement. Group discussions, team based assignments, and project work.nPrerequisite: Medical students, residents or fellows from school of medicine, and computationally oriented students with a strong interest to explore computational and mathematical methods related to the health sciences.
