LINGUIST 258A: Variation and Social Meaning

The social meaning of linguistic variation. Approaches to investigating social meaning, encoding meaning across different levels of language, the structure of meaning and theories of indexicality, the role of meaning in language change. Prerequisites: Linguist 250. Undergraduates who have not taken Linguist 250 may enroll if they have taken Linguist 150 and one additional course in sociolinguistics.
