JEWISHST 207: Biography and History (HISTORY 207, HISTORY 308)

Biography remains among the most popular historical and literary genres, if also perhaps the most vigorously contested. It continues to attract extraordinary talent - some of which will be showcased in this class. Yet, it remains singularly vulnerable because of its focus on individual achievement, its tendency to sideline people of color, and its highlighting of genius. Some of its finest practitioners are among its fiercest critics. Few wrote biography as well as Virginia Woolf, and few loathed the genre quite as lavishly. nIn this course, we'll read biographical literature and criticism of it, we'll discuss the genre with working biographers on the Stanford faculty and elsewhere.
