INTLPOL 203B: New Politics of Trade: Top Issues and National Approaches in Japan, India, and Beyond

The international trading system is stretched more than ever. This course begins with a grounding in its fundamental concepts and in the broad challenges it faces today. Contemporary issues to be examined include protecting the environment and food security as well as new trade rules for the digital economy and for critical minerals and technologies. National approaches will be featured, focusing on Japan and India as representative global North and South perspectives. The impacts of the United States and China on the trading system will also be examined. A participatory trade negotiations simulation will also be featured. Undergraduate enrollment permitted by instructor only.
