This course will examine the causes and consequences of Latin American Revolutions of the 20th century. It will focus on Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Chile, and Bolivia. We will bring these revolutions and experiments in social change under analytical and comparative perspectives. To do so, the course will use primary sources, cultural artifacts, and secondary literature to explore the following: the meaning of revolution in a Latin American context; conflicting legacies of empowerment and repression; the role of violence and its effects; gendered understandings of political change; personal experiences of revolution from multiple perspectives; and the significance of these revolutions at the local, regional, and global level.
