ILAC 143: Multiple Brazils
Since its origins as a colony, national identity has been disputed in Brazil, a country with an immense cultural multiplicity, crossed by ethnic-racial relations, and in which modernity and tradition coexist simultaneously. The course will explore its history from a contemporary point of view, through literature, music, films, and visual arts. Connecting past and present, the focus will be on how contemporary artists and writers dialogue with the past, re-reading it, and re-signifying it. Taught in English

ILAC 143E: Brazilian Literature and Culture
This survey course on modern Brazilian literature, from the 20th and 21st centuries, includes poetry and narrative. We will read canonical authors such as Mario de Andrade, Clarice Lispector, Joao Guimaraes Rosa, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, as well as more contemporary and younger authors. Our approach connects literature, as well as music and visual arts, with history and society. The focus will be on how works invest in the formal aspects of literature while dialoging with the political and social issues of their times. Taught in English
