HISTORY 206P: Police Power in World History (HISTORY 306P)

This colloquium will explore and compare histories of police forces in myriad regions of the modern world. Each week we will read the scholarship on policing of one region and understand the historical trajectories that shaped the nature of police power there. Moving beyond institutional accounts, we will locate policing apparatuses in their entanglements with histories of racial capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, nation-state formation, gender, and caste. In particular, we will discuss literature on South Asia, West Asia, North America, Western Europe and Southern Africa.
