FILMEDIA 100A: History of World Cinema I: Silent Film (FILMEDIA 300A)
Provides an overview of cinema made around the globe between its emergence as a mass medium in the late-19th century, and the rise of synchronized sound around 1930. This is a fecund period in which the 'language' of film was at once established, challenged, and expanded. We study key film movements, modes of production, and film theories that emerged in order to develop a formal, historical, and theoretical appreciation of a variety of commercial and art film traditions.
