EARTHSYS 121: Environmental, Climate and Energy Justice in Africa (AFRICAAM 121, EARTHSYS 221)
Africa accounts for the smallest share of global greenhouse gas emissions yet suffers from the most severe impacts of climate change. 43% of the population lacks access to energy, yet African earth is central to providing the critical minerals for the energy transition. How do Africans and particularly African youth grapple with these contradictions? Thriving youth led civil society is organizing across the continent for a regenerative vision for the future that challenges state and international policy on energy and mining in Africa. This class will examine the causes and consequences of Africa's particular location in contemporary discourse and action on climate change. We will examine the structural barriers to environmental and climate justice; and how the voices of civil society and activists are fighting for a future that "optimizes the continent's abundant human and natural resources and puts African people in the driving seat of the climate and development action agenda."
