ASNAMST 9SI: Revolutionary Politics in Asia and Asian America
The legendary Asian American activist and ancestor Yuri Kochiyama once said, "Our ultimate objective in learning about anything is to try to create and develop a more just society than we have seen." In this seminar, we consider this task of creating a better society from the revolutionary perspective of developing an anti-imperialist Asia and Asian America. Drawing from the seminal works of revolutionaries including Grace Lee Boggs, Jose Maria Sison, and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, we will engage with revolutionary theory and practice, from the philosophy of dialectical materialism to the methodologies of building a caring and sustainable political organization. Furthermore, this seminar challenges us to consider the role we have as Stanford students in the worldwide revolution through examining the university's relationship with society, our relationship with the university, and the world's relationship with us.
