LIFE 144: Transforming Self and Systems: Crossing Borders of Race, Nation, Gender, Sexuality, and Class (ASNAMST 144, CSRE 144, FEMGEN 144X)

Exploration of crossing borders within ourselves, and between us and them, based on a belief that understanding the self leads to understanding others. How personal identity struggles have meaning beyond the individual, how self healing can lead to community healing, how the personal is political, and how artistic self expression based in self understanding can address social issues. The tensions of victimization and agency, contemplation and action, humanities and science, embracing knowledge that comes from the heart as well as the mind. Studies are founded in synergistic consciousness as movement toward meaning, balance, connectedness, and wholeness. Engaging these questions through group process, journaling, reading, drama, creative writing, and storytelling. Study is academic and self-reflective, with an emphasis on developing and presenting creative works in various media that express identity development across borders.

LIFE 150G: Performing Race, Gender, and Sexuality (ARTSINST 150G, CSRE 150G, CSRE 350G, FEMGEN 150G, TAPS 150G)

In this theory and practice-based course, students will examine performances by and scholarly texts about artists who critically and mindfully engage race, gender, and sexuality. Students will cultivate their skills as artist-scholars through written assignments and the creation of performances in response to the assigned material. Attendance and written reflection about a live performance event on campus are required. Students will also learn various meditation practices as tools for making and critiquing performance, in both our seminar discussions and performance workshops. We will approach mindfulness as method and theory in our own practice, as well as in relation to the works studied. We will also consider the ethics and current debates concerning the mindfulness industry. Examples of artists studied include James Luna, Nao Bustamante, Renee Cox, William Pope.L, Cassils, boychild, Curious, Adrian Piper, Xandra Ibarra, Valérie Reding, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, and Ana Mendieta.

LIFE 170: Laughter & Play for Wellbeing (TAPS 170W, WELLNESS 170)

Learn about and practice laughter yoga, combined with theater exercises. Laughter yoga (distinct from traditional movement-based yoga) is a modality that integrates laughter exercises with yogic breathing. Explore the growing field of research on laughter yoga and its positive effects on wellbeing and other health outcomes. Examine the various dimensions of laughter yoga as a form of cardiovascular and aerobic exercise, mindfulness, and play. Use theater exercises to leverage the power of performative, healing laughter and to cultivate embodied awareness, creativity, resilience, and joy. Readings and exercises will draw from the work of pioneers in the fields of laughter wellness and socially engaged theater, such as Madan Kataria and Augusto Boal.

LIFE 176: Love: Art, Science, and Practice

Love is said to be the key to everything from psychological development to achieving social justice. But as renowned psychologist Erich Fromm said as far back as the 1950's, love appears to be disintegrating in modern society. This may be partly because most of us don't in fact understand it very well. It may be true that, as the Beatles say, All You Need is Love, but it also seems, as Lady Gaga says, we Don't Know What Love Is. This class is designed to give students an opportunity to take a deep dive into the nature of love - its history, its practice, and how it has been studied. We will look at all types of love, from familial and brotherly to romantic and spiritual, and you will be introduced to conflicting ways it has been defined (a drive, an emotion, an orientation to the world, etc.), functions it has been given (reproduction, kinship, finding ultimate truth, etc.), and ways people have cultivated it (service, therapy, spiritual practice). This class is designed to give students an opportunity to take a deep dive into the nature of love - its history, its practice, and how it has been studied. This course will also introduce you to how various disciplines such as anthropology, biology, psychology, and art approach a complex experience such as love. And after we get a taste of how various fields understand and study love, you will launch your own investigations by researching and writing two things: a short research paper and a short narrative. LIFE 180: Art, Meditation, and Creation (ARTHIST 180, ARTSINST 280)

Art and meditation invite us to be fully present in our minds and bodies. This class will give you tools to integrate mind and body as you explore artworks on display at the university's museums and throughout campus. In your engagement with activity-based learning at these venues, you will attend to perception and embodiment in the process of writing and making creative work about art. You will also learn meditation techniques and be exposed to authors who foreground the importance of the body in both writing and making art. For your meditation-centered and research-based final creative project, you will have the option of writing an experimental visual analysis or devising a performance.

LIFE 183G: Sing & Be Well: Exploring and Integrating Wellness Through Singing (MUSIC 183G)

Finding an expressive outlet is essential in a world where stress and anxiety are common. Singing has been proven to be one such outlet. This immersive course explores the health benefits of singing. In addition to research and expert guest lectures, the course emphasizes vocal technique, mindfulness, and group singing through vocal improvisation. Singers of all levels will discover the connection between singing, joy, and holistic health.

ME 14AX: Design for Silver and Bronze

This class will teach piercing saw work in sterling silver, light forming, embossing and potentially enameling. Equal attention will be given to technique and manufacturing. Students will receive a tool kit and materials prior to the start of the Arts Intensive. Sara and Amanda have been teaching ME298: Silversmithing in Design at Stanford for 17 years, they are full time designers at RedStart Design, LLC and also Lecturers in Design in the Mechanical Engineering Department.

ME 248: Silver Pendant Project

In ME248 a C/NC class, students design and create a silver pendant. Beginning with a basic introduction to design and CAD, students use a computer aided design tool to create a 3D model of their pendant design. Next, using machines and processes at the Product Realization Lab, students build a version of their part in a wax-like material. This part is then used in a lost-wax investment casting process to turn the printed part into a cast silver part. Finally, the students are introduced to a set of hand tools they will use to turn their cast silver part into a finished silver pendant. Students who take ME248 for 1 unit complete one pendant, and take 4 2 hour labs: wax part preparation lab, casting lab, and two finishing labs. Students who take ME248 for 2 units complete a second project beyond the initial pendant, and in addition to the 4 labs will do 3 additional 2 hour labs: a wax printing lab, a sprueing/gating lab and an investing lab. This course must be taken for 2 units to be eligible for Ways credit. Summer offering not eligible for Ways credit.

MED 53Q: Storytelling in Medicine (LIFE 53Q)

Stories are at the core of medical practice, but the skills developed are applicable across disciplines, including technology and business. Storytelling in Medicine is a new sophomore seminar designed to teach skills in multiple modalities of storytelling including narrative, oral, social media, academic presentations and visual storytelling for different audiences. This seminar combines small groups, interactive workshops, and guest speakers who are experts in their fields of medicine. This will also include editing and support to complete your own story by the end of the seminar.

MI 110: Photographing Nature

Utilizes the idiom of photography to learn about nature, enhance observation, and explore scientific concepts. Builds upon the pioneering photographic work of Eadweard J. Muybridge on human and animal locomotion. A secondary goal is to learn the grammar, syntax, composition, and style of nature photography to enhance the use of this medium as a form of scientific communication and also to explore the themes of change across time and space. Scientific themes to be explored include: taxonomy, habitat preservation, climate change; species diversity; survival and reproductive strategies; ecological niches and coevolution, carrying capacity and sustainability, population densities, predation, and predator-prey relationships, open-space management, the physics of photography. Extensive use of field trips and class critque.
