ARTHIST 274A: The Art of the Uncanny (ARTHIST 474A)

From murderous dolls to evil doppelgängers, humanoid doubles haunt the Western cultural imagination. Beginning with an in-depth look at the contested concept of the "uncanny", the seminar traces the history of anxiety about non-human humans in the West. An interdisciplinary inquiry, this course draws its sources from art, film, literature, psychology, and science.

ARTHIST 293A: Latin American Art and Literature: 100 Years of Modernisms (ILAC 126)

This course will explore the different kinds of modernisms and modernities that Latin American artists and authors have produced from the early twentieth century to the present. Defined as a break with the past and with tradition, the term "modernism" in Latin America has signified specific transformations that speak to the continent¿s long history of colonialism and alleged marginality in relation to Europe and the United States. How have Latin American artistic and literary movements drawn from and broken with European modernisms and avant-gardes? What meanings of "tradition" and "modernity" emerge from their works, especially in their engagement with Indigenous and Afro-Latin American cultures? By examining artworks together with literary texts, we will address their aesthetic dimensions, as well as the socio-historical and political conditions that made them possible. Some movements may include Antropofagia (Brazil), Mexican Muralism, Surrealism, Indigenisms, Afro-Caribbean art and literature, Abstractionism, Neo-Concretism, and Tropicalia. Course content and discussions will be in English. ILAC/Spanish majors should take the course for 5 units and must do the readings and assignments in Spanish.

ARTHIST 449: Latinx Art: Exhibition History and Theory (ARTHIST 249, CHILATST 249)

This seminar examines exhibitions of art made by Latinas/es/os/xs in the United States, including Chicanos, Nuyoricans, and other Black, Brown, and Indigenous artists. While exploring exhibitions, students will consider curators' and artists' relationships to identity, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Students will also study how practitioners have responded to and challenged discrimination, institutional exclusion, and national debates through their work. The course will include guest curator talks and will result in final projects that comprise either research papers that critically look at exhibitions or proposals for exhibitions of Latinx art.

ARTSINST 11Q: Art in the Metropolis (ARTSTUDI 11Q, ENGLISH 11Q, FILMEDIA 11Q, MUSIC 11Q, TAPS 11Q)

This seminar is offered in conjunction with the annual "Arts Immersion" trip to New York that takes place over the spring break and is organized by the Stanford Arts Institute (SAI). Enrollment in this course is a requirement for taking part in the spring break trip. The program is designed to provide a group of students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the cultural life of New York City guided by faculty and SAI staff. Students will experience a broad range and variety of art forms (visual arts, theater, opera, dance, etc.) and will meet with prominent arts administrators and practitioners, some of whom are Stanford alumni. In the seminar, we will prepare for the diverse experiences the trip affords and develop individual projects related to particular works of art, exhibitions, and performances that we'll encounter in person during the stay in New York. ARTSINST 280: Art, Meditation, and Creation (ARTHIST 180, LIFE 180)

Art and meditation invite us to be fully present in our minds and bodies. This class will give you tools to integrate mind and body as you explore artworks on display at the university's museums and throughout campus. In your engagement with activity-based learning at these venues, you will attend to perception and embodiment in the process of writing and making creative work about art. You will also learn meditation techniques and be exposed to authors who foreground the importance of the body in both writing and making art. For your meditation-centered and research-based final creative project, you will have the option of writing an experimental visual analysis or devising a performance.

ARTSTUDI 123I: Undergraduate Seminar in Composition: Music, Art, and Intermedia (MUSIC 123I)

How do music and art relate? How does one speak for, with, the other? In the past century, Western visual art turned towards abstraction and time-based works. Techniques and processes for interaction between image and sound expanded dramatically. What better place to learn about them than the Anderson Collection? Through students' own visual and aural creations, we will explore and share individual approaches to time, symbol, memory, and meaning. Previous experience in music composition is welcome but not required. This course must be taken for a minimum of 3 units and a letter grade to be eligible for Ways-AII credit.

ARTSTUDI 162: Embodied Interfaces

Our computers, phones and devices see us predominantly as fingers and eyes staring at screens. What would happen if our technology acknowledged more of our rich physical presence and capabilities in its design? How have artists and designers used different sensing technologies to account for more of our embodied selves in their works? In this studio course we explore various sensing technologies and design artworks that engage our whole selves. Interfaces explored range from the practical to the poetic. Sensors may involve flex sensors, heat sensors, microphones and simple camera tracking technology. We analyze different tools for their appropriateness for different tasks and extend them through our designs.

Students develop and produce intermedia works. Musical and visual approaches to the conceptualisation and shaping of time-based art. Exploration of sound and image relationship. Study of a wide spectrum of audiovisual practices including experimental animation, video art, dance, performance, non-narrative forms, interactive art and installation art. Focus on works that use music/sound and image as equal partners. Limited enrollment. Prerequisites: consent of instructors, and one of FILMPROD 114, ARTSTUDI 131, 138, 167, 177, 179, or MUSIC 123, or equivalent. May be repeated for credit

ASNAMST 16N: Behind "Swingposium:" Activism in Performing Arts (MUSIC 16N)

Swingposium ( https://taiko.org/swingposium) is an immersive theater production, being presented by San Jose Taiko at Stanford in November. It tells the hidden history of Japanese Americans boosting morale in WWII Incarceration Camps through swing dances with live big band music, and will include student performers from Stanford Jazz Orchestra, Stanford Taiko, Swingtime, and the Asian American Theater Project. This class - through readings and discussion, conversations with artists, and hands-on experience with taiko, theater and swing music/dance - explores foundations of this production: the Japanese American community, North American taiko, African American roots of big band and swing, and immersive and Asian American theater.
