At the beginning of the 20th century, modernism announced itself as a radically new departure from the past; we're still grappling with it today. This class examines older classics (authors may include Joseph Conrad, T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Henry James, or Virginia Woolf), along with more recent works that seem to allude to or otherwise make use of modernism (authors may include Gwendolyn Brooks, Toni Morrison, Cynthia Ozick, and more).
