PWR 2SN: Writing & Rhetoric 2: Rhetoric of Activism

PWR 2 courses focus on developing strategies for presenting research-based arguments in both written and oral/multimedia genres. In this course, we will read from sociology to psychology, from political science to history, to investigate the role of rhetoric in social movements. We will explore notions of "revolution" and analyze similarities in language and strategy across movements; what does Greta Thunberg have to do with the Black Lives Matter movement? PWR 2ST: Writing & Rhetoric 2: Science, Democracy and Social Media

Prerequisite: PWR 1. Social media have greatly enlivened and democratized science communication so that it now moves between scientists and various audiences. Scientific content is no longer static, nor is it merely for advanced researchers. Scientists using social media are learning to assess content collaboratively to help provide better science in public communication. One of the particular obligations of university science students is to join the conversation, help review and revise content in the public sphere. Students in this course will actively engage in the evolving world of science communication and practice their scientific writing, research and oral presentation skills. Focusing on themes of science and culture, you'll take an interdisciplinary approach to examine an issue that matters to you. You will have the opportunity to consider a wide range of genres and translate your argument and findings into a live presentation.
