Hanyu pinyin is used (no reading/writing of Chinese characters required), with emphasis on supporting accurate pronunciation. CHINLANG 14B: First -Year Cantonese, Second Quarter

This is a 5-unit each, three-quarter series of First Year Cantonese for beginners. The primary objective of the series is to introduce to students the Cantonese language and culture through engaging activities in daily life situations to enhance speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at the beginning level. By the end of the year, students will acquire the knowledge of the sound system, basic grammar, and the ability to converse, as well as read and write the most basic Cantonese characters, needed in daily-life communication. Authentic materials and appropriate online resources are incorporated in the communicative activities and guided practices of the course to facilitate Cantonese learning.

CHINLANG 19: Intermediate Conversational Cantonese, Second Quarter

This is the first of a 3-quarter series of intermediate Cantonese for students who have finished beginning Conversational Cantonese, or its equivalent. The primary objective of the intermediate series is to continue exploring the Cantonese language and culture through engaging activities designed to build on their speaking and listening proficiencies needed in traveling, studying, living, or working in Cantonese-speaking communities. Authentic materials such as classic and popular Cantopop, movie clips, and TV show clips are incorporated in the courses and appropriate online resources are used to facilitate learning. Prerequisite: Beginning Conversational Cantonese sequence or equivalent level (consent of instructor).
