Dimensions of World War II in Italy. Military and diplomatic events, as well as the dramatic shifts in Italian fortunes at war. Social and personal dimensions of the Italian experience at war will be a major focus. The experiences of Italians fighting on the eastern front and in the Balkans, and of those who suffered multiple occupations and German reprisals at home. The fate of the Italian Jews, and the gendered character of the home front and partisan warfare. Florence as the focal point for understanding the character of the war.
