Recent trends in art, current Italian artistic production, differences and the dialogue among visual arts. Events, schools, and movements of the 20th century. Theoretical background and practical training in various media. Work at the Stanford Center and on site at museums, exhibits, and out in the city armed with a sketchbook and camera. OSPGEN 32: The Copenhagen-Stockholm Trans-Idiomatic Arts Practicum

Reflection on the difference between "home" and "away" through the prism of art. Review arts events throughout Copenhagen and Stockholm in varying media and create similarly varied original art projects in response. OSPKYOTO 74: In the Air of Kyoto: Sound, Site and Image

Developing a creative relationship with the sonic environment through investigation and exploration. The nature of sound as it exists in physical space and social space; as it emanates from and penetrates the listening body. Special attention to the acoustic sites of Kyoto with regard to both the historical and contemporary ways in which sound functions. Technical skills for recording, editing and mixing sounds; new ways of listening; collaborative projects for public presentation. Three main creative projects constitute the core of the practicum.

PWR 91CL: Intermediate Writing: Self & Science

"Self & Science" mines the intersection of memoir and science writing. In this advanced experimental writing course, students will read a selection of essays by writers including Lewis Thomas, Oliver Sacks, Annie Dillard, and Mark Doty, which illustrate the shared intellectual foundation in observation of scientific and poetic inquiry. Building on these readings, students will be challenged to produce an experimental essay that transgresses genre boundaries in the service of considering how personal reflection can narrate researched discoveries. Over the course of the quarter, students are invited to bolster their overall communication acumen, enhance their ability to share valuable discoveries beyond the confines of their major discipline, and practice the difficult bliss of engaging a discerning public audience.
