PWR 1A: Introduction to Writing at Stanford: Rhetorics of Popular Culture

What does popular culture say about the larger culture? PWR 1A uses questions about pop culture -- music, movies, sports-- for writing and researching. How do video games teach engineering and physics? How do detective and courtroom dramas lead to discussions about DNA analysis? We look at pop culture as cultural critics, using ideas about technology, society, and economics to analyze human behavior. We'll study theories about media to research how everyday artifacts are both trashy and poignant signs of our culture. We¿ll write an analytical essay about cultural commentary, learn about library research to explore topics of your choice, and share our research. We¿ll work together as a group to practice collaboration and project-based learning. Enrollment exclusive to incoming Stanford freshman student athletes. PWR1A classes are small, workshop-style meetings that encourage extensive interaction between students and instructors. PWR1A does not meet the Stanford first-year writing requirement.

PWR 1D: Writing Well: An Introduction to College Writing

Offered only to participants in the Summer College for High School Students. Develops critical reading, writing, and research skills applicable to any area of study. Emphases include close reading, analysis of varied texts, development of strong theses, revision strategies, and introduction to research-based argument. Classes are small, encouraging extensive interaction between students and instructors. Discussions of readings, peer work, and individual conferences with instructors. Each section has a thematic emphasis developed by the instructor; students choose sections based on their individual interests. Does not meet the Stanford first-year writing requirement.

Notes: Writing about Race and Ethnicity: With recent films like "The Man with the Iron Fists 2" and "Sicario," why does Hollywood continue portraying Asians as violent Kung Fu fighters or sinister dragon ladies and Latinos as drug dealers and gangbangers? Beyond stereotypes, how does race and ethnicity influence one's sense of personal identity? How do biracial people choose their ethnic affiliations? How do immigrants become American? What is it like to be bilingual and bicultural? These are all very important questions, and students in this class will have an opportunity to explore them to get a deeper sense of how race and ethnicity matter today in American Society. The variety of readings, videos, and writing assignments we will cover in this class are all designed to train students as critical thinkers and effective writers. Overall, the reading, writing, and presentation skills covered in this class will prepare students for college level classes.

Notes: Writing about Popular Culture: Rhetoric in American Media: This small, activity-based writing course requires students to think critically about how television, films, video games, and online media both shape and reflect common social and political beliefs. For instance, our inquiry will open up conversations pertaining to how different television shows, from The Adams Family to The Brady Bunch to The Simpsons to Modern Family have forced us to imagine and reimagine the "American family." We will ask difficult questions about the trajectory of racial and ethnic inclusion in American media thinking about shows like The Walking Dead, and the casting of Glenn, and the new(er) Netflix original series, Luke Cage, about a Black superhero. Apart from family structures and race/ethnicity in American media, we may also consider how social satire/commentary like South Park or BoJack Horseman urge viewers to think about social and political issues. Although our class focus will be on television, students are able to also address films, video games, and online media in their own research. Our discussions will culminate in several writing assignments where students will demonstrate their ability to rhetorically analyze a piece of media and to engage with college-level researched writing.

Notes: Ka-Ching! The Science of Shopping: Why do some stores draw you in like a magnet and make you want to linger, while others make you yawn? What makes a commercial space look and feel right or wrong for a particular audience? Why do women tend to like shopping more than men? These are the kinds of questions you'll explore in this course. You'll write two essays. The first is a rhetorical analysis of a local commercial space of your choice. Our field trip to the Stanford Shopping Center will help you choose a store to analyze. In previous summers, students have analyzed stores ranging from Urban Outfitters to American Girl. For the second essay, you'll research and write about a topic of your choice related to shopping. Some sample topics include the ethics of sweatshops, GMO labeling, the appropriateness of violence in media (such as video games and songs), digital media piracy, laws to discourage the fashion industry from promoting eating disorders, and the relationship between shopping and race/class/gender.

PWR 6VT: Writing in the University: Debates about the Politics and Technologies of Journalism

Lately, journalism has been in the news: every day we see or hear a new story about problems with journalism and the news media¿from charges of biased coverage to fake news circulating on Facebook. Yet, push alerts from news apps and social media also shape our daily conversations. In this class, we will investigate the news industry, examining the challenges faced by journalists today and emerging new forms of digital journalism. We will focus on the political, economic and technological forces that have shaped the writing and rhetoric of journalists. Students might explore debates such as fake news, bias and objectivity; partisanship and polarization; or polling and political coverage. We start by writing an analytical essay about multimedia reporting, move into writing about research regarding a topic of your choice, and close by sharing research in oral presentations. At each step, we work together as a group, doing workshops, engaging in discussion, and collaborating in peer review. Our research projects will provide the opportunity to engage with recent scholarship and stake out your own positions on the future of journalism.
