This course examines the formative historical developments that have helped shape the post-1798 Middle East. In particular, this course will study the region's modes of integration into the capitalist world economy; the shift from Ottoman to European hegemony and the subsequent superpower politics; the formation of the nation-state system with the displacement and violence it has involved, especially against minority ethnic and religious groups; the ideological rivalries for regional hegemony; class and gender politics alongside other subaltern identities; and finally, the dynamics of the Arab Spring.
