CSRE 389A: Race, Ethnicity, and Language: Racial, Ethnic, and Linguistic Formations (ANTHRO 320A, EDUC 389A, LINGUIST 253, SYMSYS 389A)

Language, as a cultural resource for shaping our identities, is central to the concepts of race and ethnicity. This seminar explores the linguistic construction of race and ethnicity across a wide variety of contexts and communities. We begin with an examination of the concepts of race and ethnicity and what it means to be "doing race," both as scholarship and as part of our everyday lives. Throughout the course, we will take a comparative perspective and highlight how different racial/ethnic formations (Asian, Black, Latino, Native American, White, etc.) participate in similar, yet different, ways of drawing racial and ethnic distinctions. The seminar will draw heavily on scholarship in (linguistic) anthropology, sociolinguistics and education. We will explore how we talk and don't talk about race, how we both position ourselves and are positioned by others, how the way we talk can have real consequences on the trajectory of our lives, and how, despite this, we all participate in maintaining racial and ethnic hierarchies and inequality more generally, particularly in schools.

DESIGN 131: Advanced Design: Needfinding

Needfinding focuses on design research and design planning. The premise of the class is that by studying the world around us, we can get a better understanding of what people need, and use those insights to create meaningful new products and services. Needfinding draws upon theory and methods from anthropology, psychology, engineering and design planning. In this class, students develop proficiency in research and planning through a combination of in- class activities, readings on theory and real world projects. Emphasis is on developing the flexible thinking skills that enable the designer to navigate the future. Prerequisites for undergraduates: DESIGN 121 and DESIGN 141, or consent of the instructor. This class is required for undergrad Design majors. Priority for this class will be given to senior Design students.

DESIGN 315: WHY NOW? Exploring your Work, Choices and Creativity

How do you see yourself and your work? How do your perceptions shape your choices, creativity, and sense of agency? A course of study for students preparing to launch out of Stanford. This course is an exploration of how to lead a more intentional, creative, and committed life - one that aligns with your values, aspirations, and actions. Each week, we read and discuss a book that challenges our understanding of work, meaning, perception, and personal agency. Through structured conversations, students connect ideas across disciplines (ranging from anthropology, to fine art, to technology), exploring the nature of creativity, purpose, and self-perception. EALC 214: Specters of Asia: Hauntology and Ethnography of East Asia (ANTHRO 314E, EALC 314)

This graduate seminar examines East Asia through a "hauntological" lens by focusing on its qualities of "spectrality" made manifest as a spatial, phenomenological, and imaginal condition. At a moment when global geopolitical changes and renewed imperial ambitions consume public attention in the United States and around the world, this seminar attends to the relevance of the lingering past in order to grapple with the contemporary conditions in East Asia. How might renewed attention to the "spectrality" of contemporary Asia's national and interstitial states reorient and destabilize our notions of time, being, and place? Focusing on recent anthropological and ethnographic accounts of the spectral and ethereal in Asia to understand the politics at the margins, this course takes seriously the spectral images, imaginations, and phantoms of inequity, division, and historical legacy, or as Byron Good recently put it, "the anthropology of being haunted" as a means of grappling with the future of Asia as an entity and identity.

EBS 179: Opinion Change Modeling and Measurement (EBS 279)

Opinions can decide whether societies achieve sustainable outcomes or not. Modern online echo chambers can amplify climate denial extremism, for example. Polarized institutions are not as responsive to climate change threats and rolling disasters. This course provides students a scientific framework to understand how social influence changes opinions, drawing on cognitive science, sociology, anthropology, and network science. Students will design empirically motivated simulations of social interventions to reduce extremism or polarization in a population, for example. Students will also learn statistical techniques to reliably measure opinion change. Students will write their own models and analyses in the R programming language using the socmod library (https://css4s.github.io/socmod/), developed by the Instructor for education and research. Students will develop computational analyses that evaluate candidate social influence interventions to promote sustainable outcomes, culminating in a journal article-style final paper. Students will gain transferable skills in technical writing, project development, computer programming, and other general computational techniques.

Developing sustainable societies requires that we can predict the possible outcomes of policies and interventions aimed at spreading sustainable practices. Such prediction requires an understanding of how behaviors are learned socially within modern, complex social networks. Agent-based modeling is an important computational technique for predicting how sustainable behaviors might be transmitted via social learning, diffusing through social networks, under stochastic and uncertain conditions. Agents are simulated people. Agents have specified psychological characteristics, such as how likely a person is to adopt a more sustainable behavior based on a person's demographics, socio-economic status, and beliefs, among other factors. Agent psychology is based on published psychological research. EBS 301: Human Ecology

Foundations of human-environment interactions focusing on livelihoods, adaptation, and self-governance. We bring together theoretical perspectives from cultural ecology, self-governance, economic anthropology, human behavioral ecology, political economy, political ecology, and cultural evolution. Topics include livelihoods and subsistence, common-pool resources, cooperation, collective action, equilibrium/disequilibrium ecology, adaptation, resilience, risk, robustness, relational approaches, ways of knowing, complexity, and adaptive management. In a small seminar setting students will learn (a) to understand the basic telnets, limitations, blind spots and unexplored issues of different theoretical perspectives related to human ecology. (b) To articulate ideas, identify and formulate questions, learn how to provide critique to other colleagues in a positive, empathic manner so it can be listened to, as well as to identify excellent work and provide measured praise of it. (c) To put into conversation theory and method. This is the first course in the core sequence for the Environmental Behavioral Sciences track of the Environmental Social Sciences PhD program. Instructor permission required for non-Environmental Social Sciences PhD students.
