Personal bio
Daria Hekmat-Scafe received her Bachelors degree in Biology from Pomona College (Claremont, CA) and her Ph.D., also in Biology, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA). Her graduate research involved a molecular genetic analysis of start site selection by yeast RNA polymerase II. After graduating from MIT, Dr. Scafe moved to Yale University as a postdoctoral fellow. Seeking a position at a place where teaching, as well as research, were valued, Dr. Scafe then took a visiting assistant professorship at Mills College (Oakland, CA), where she taught both lecture and laboratory courses for Biology majors and non-majors and ran a small research laboratory. After her visiting appointment at Mills ended, Dr. Scafe moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where she was employed as an associate research specialist for a number of years. Dr. Scafe's research involved the identification and analysis of genetic contributors to seizure-susceptibility in a fruit fly model of human epilepsy. At UC-Berkeley, Dr. Scafe guided undergraduate research advisees, eight of whom were co-authors on published research papers. In 2010, Dr. Scafe joined the Stanford Biology faculty. In addition to her scholastic pursuits, Dr. Scafe enjoys hiking, cross-country skiing, ice skating, and hanging out with her family. Currently teaching
