David A. Ansel
Personal bio
David Ansel is Clinical Associate Professor of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He graduated from UCLA (now Geffen) School of Medicine, did his pediatrics residency at Columbia-Presbyterian in NYC, followed by a clinical fellowship in developmental (what was then called an "ambulatory") pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital. For 25 years he ran a private practice near Boston providing both primary care and developmental-behavioral services while teaching at Boston Children's. He helped found, and for 6 years served on the board of directors of, one of the largest exclusively pediatric IPA's in the country. He now runs Stanford's Developmental-Behavioral Primary Care Initiative (DBPCI). Dr. Ansel's areas of expertise include ADHD, learning differences / disabilities, high functioning autism & Asperger Syndrome, anxiety / mood / behavior disorders in school age children, psychopharmacology, special education, and care coordination for children with special health care needs. He is particularly interested in helping medical students understand controversies in these areas by placing directed readings into historical and policy context. Students will pick an area of interest and, after preliminary discussion of the topic with (and perhaps suggestions by) Dr. Ansel, identify their own reading(s) which may be research papers, practice guidelines, laws/regulations, books, or other published materials. They will submit a (usually written) critical review of the reading(s), then finish the course through another meeting with Dr. Ansel to consider the topic further and get feedback about their review.
