This course explores the ways that individuals and movements for social and economic equality have redefined and contested gender and sexuality in the modern United States. Using a combination of primary and secondary sources, we will explore the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality in the politics of woman suffrage, racial justice, reproductive rights, and gay and trans rights, as well as conservative and right-wing responses. Majors and non-majors alike are welcome.

CLASSICS 16N: Sappho: Erotic Poetess of Lesbos (FEMGEN 24N)
Preference to freshmen. Sappho's surviving fragments in English; traditions referring to or fantasizing about her disputed life. How her poetry and legend inspired women authors and male poets such as Swinburne, Baudelaire, and Pound. Paintings inspired by Sappho in ancient and modern times, and composers who put her poetry to music.

CLASSICS 36: Gender and Power in Ancient Rome
Interactions of gender and power in ancient Roman politics, religion, spectacles, and daily life. Masculinity and femininity in founding legends and public rituals; the ambiguous status of Vestal Virgins; gendered behavior in the Roman Forum; the spatial logic of prostitution; sexual characterizations of good vs. bad emperors in ancient texts; gender and time in Roman houses; inversions of gender and space in early Christian martyr narratives. Readings include modern gender theory as well as ancient Roman texts and material culture.

CSRE 103S: Indigenous Feminisms (AMSTUD 103, FEMGEN 103S, NATIVEAM 103S)
Indigenous Feminism/s and Queer Indigenous Studies seek to alter major disciplinary questions in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) in order to account for the significant lifeworlds and experiences of Native women and Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer individuals. This course explores how the subdisciplines confront WGSS with significant critiques of settler sexualities and white heteropatriarchy, emphasizing the literary and cultural production of Native women and 2SQ folk. Centered around readings, films, and student contributions, the course also seeks to trouble the colonized classroom by unseating settler authority in education. Students (re)imagine the possibilities of Indigenous liberation oriented toward non-heteropatriarchal ways of knowledge and being in the world.

EDUC 173: Gender and Higher Education: National and International Perspectives (EDUC 273, FEMGEN 173, SOC 173, SOC 273)
This course examines the ways in which higher education structures and policies interact with gender, gender identity, and other characteristics in the United States, around the world, and over time. Attention is paid to how changes in those structures and policies relate to access to, experiences in, and outcomes of higher education by gender. Students can expect to gain an understanding of theories and perspectives from the social sciences relevant to an understanding of the role of higher education in relation to structures of gender differentiation and hierarchy. Topics include undergraduate and graduate education; identity and sexuality; gender and science; gender and faculty; and feminist scholarship and pedagogy.
