OSPOXFRD 11: The European City
The long and complex growth of European cities over the last millennium, looking mainly at their physical development but looking also at their economic, social and political evolution. Focus on Oxford, whose history goes back for more than a millennium, but also look for comparative purposes at Florence, Paris and Berlin. Topics to be covered in detail include urban architecture and planning, the provision of housing and public facilities, and the ways in which old cities have responded to the changing needs of the contemporary world.
