Engagement with the real world of Madrid through public service work with NGOs and public service professions such as teaching. Depending on availability, topics relevant to present-day Spain may include: the national health plan, educational system, immigration, prostitution, refugees, youth, and fair trade. Spanish exploration and colonization of California from the 16th century to the end of the Spanish colonial period in 1821. Themes include: geographical explorations in the context of European colonial expansion; demographic evolution of Native American inhabitants and immigrant population; general social and economic development of the colony; controversies surrounding the mission system; role of the Pacific coasts of North America in the Spanish enlightenment and in strategies for imperial defense and development in the revolutionary era of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
