Creative expressions of Australia's many ethnic groups, with an emphasis on the ways in which those very arts have been part of ethnic and racial formations within Australian history. Topics include: indigenous traditions; the colonial engagements that started with the voyage of Captain James Cook (1770) and the penal colony led by Captain Arthur Phillip (1788); the sometimes rival pull of Asia and the west; and Australia's place amid the global flows of the early 21st century. Throughout these histories the role of migrants and refugees, of welcoming and hostile hosts, will be considered in relation to the creative arts. Location: Sydney, Australia

OSPGEN 50: Bauhaus: The Origin of Modern Design
This seminar takes students to Berlin, Weimar, and Dessau to study on site one of the most influential design movements of the modern age. The Staatliches Bauhaus was a German design school that ran for only 14 years--from 1919 to 1933--but its immense impact is still apparent in architecture and design today. This seminar coincides with Bauhaus 100, the centenary of the school's founding, and will take full advantage of special centennial events, performances, and exhibits.

OSPGEN 54: The European Union in a Globalized World
In Brussels, visits to the European Union's three main political institutions, the Commission, Council and Parliament, and NATO headquarters. Meet with senior politicians and diplomats to discuss the current challenges and threats to the EU's economy and its security, such as Brexit, the stability of the Euro, the influx of refugees, the rise of populism within the EU and autocratic governments in neighboring countries, and the current unpredictability of transatlantic relations. Also visit the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.

OSPGEN 55: Innovation in Technology and Human Rights Institutions
This two-week course examines the ongoing comprehensive peace process in Colombia, namely through the creation of a number of unique transitional justice institutions including: a Special Jurisdiction for Peace, with competence to impose criminal sanctions for charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and gross violations of the laws of war; a truth commission; a disappearances commission; and administrative units devoted to reparations. Students meet with academics, advocates, government officials, journalists, and other actors with an eye towards understanding the challenges and opportunities presented by the field of transitional justice.

Main themes of Russian history -- autocracy, empire, national tradition, European culture -- through the lens of three cities, St. Petersburg, Novgorod and Tallinn, Estonia. Contrast the architecture, culture and historical experience of St. Petersburg with traditional Russia, exemplified by the ancient town of Novgorod, and with Tallinn, a non-Russian capital city in the vast Russian empire.
