How various segments of Japanese society view the war in Asia, where fault lines lie, and what attempts have been made to achieve reconciliation. Topics include: origins of the Asia-Pacific War; foreign and domestic images of Japan's wartime actions; American Occupation policy and the Tokyo war crimes trial; impact of peace movements and the Cold War; the emergence of conflicting postwar narratives about the war; Asian perceptions of postwar Japan; the institutionalization of public memory; attempts and failures at reconciliation with Japan's neighbors; comparisons with Europe.

The Fourier transform as a tool for solving physical problems. Fourier series, the Fourier transform of continuous and discrete signals and its properties. The Dirac delta, distributions, and generalized transforms. Convolutions and correlations and applications; probability distributions, sampling theory, filters, and analysis of linear systems. Origin, history and production of genres of Japanese popular culture such as manga, anime, popular music, television drama, film and new media, and their link to current phenomena. Themed units: disaster anime; politics of shojo; otakuology; keitai studies. Analysis of media texts and how age, gender, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class are represented.
