CLASSICS 12G: Intermediate Greek: Herodotus - the father of history?
(Formerly
CLASSGRK 102.) Herodotus of Halicarnassus (ca. 484 - 426) has often been celebrated as the "father of history." But the promised "display of his research" owes much to the Homeric poems, contemporary tragedy, and the medical discourse, and it contains lengthy passages quite fabulous and mysterious. We will read sections of book 1 and 8 in Greek, review morphology and syntax as needed, and reflect on the Ionic enlightenment, Herodotus' role therein, and his status as a historian. Classics majors and minors may repeat for credit with advance approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
