EDUC 196: The Design of Technologies for Casual Learning (EDUC 396)
Studio-based, participatory, and user-centered development of casualnlearning technologies is explored, using the Apple iPhone as anprototype platform. The term "casual" is borrowed from casual gamingnto denote that the learning technologies are meant for learners to usenin "extreme informal" learning circumstances (while "on the go", "anyntime and any place"). The class builds on learning about andnsynthesizing knowledge, theory and development activity in four areasnincluding learning theories, mobile technologies, games andnparticipatory design processes.
EDUC 197: Education, Gender, and Development (FEMGEN 297, SOC 134)
Theories and perspectives from the social sciences relevant to the role of education in changing, modifying, or reproducing structures of gender differentiation and hierarchy. Cross-national research on the status of girls and women and the role of development organizations and processes.

EDUC 198: Early Education Policy and Practice: A Global Perspective
This course addresses social and educational policies affecting young children, focusing on France in comparison to the U.S. Values and beliefs about the role of the state versus parents will be considered in discussions related to federal and state/province policies, as well as other political, economic, and ideological factors that affect policies. We then consider what is known about children¿s social, emotional and cognitive development and the implications for early childhood policies and practices on children¿s development.

EDUC 200B: Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods
(Formerly
EDUC 151.) Primarily for master's students: An introduction to the core concepts and methods of qualitative research. Through a variety of hands-on learning activities, readings, field experiences, class lectures, and discussions, students will explore the processes and products of qualitative inquiry.nnThis is a graduate level course.
