OSPGEN 34: Middle East Technology and Engineering

Two-week study trip to the Middle East accompanied by a Stanford professor and graduate student lead. Offered by the School of Engineering in partnership with the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP). First-hand insights into technology and engineering based businesses in these emerging economies. Participants will: 1) gain knowledge of a wide spectrum of technology-based companies in the focus country; 2) understand, in a comparative approach, how western companies localize to stay competitive; and 3) experience first-hand the social and environmental impact of these businesses. Prior to departure, students will go through a curriculum targeted at understanding the state of technology business in the Middle East in order to maximize the learning experience students will have on the ground.

OSPGEN 43: Objetos Religiosos: the Religious Life of Madrid and its Environs through its Material Culture

Cathedrals, rosaries, icons, relics, candles and incense, scarves and hats¿objects of all sorts play a prominent role in all religions, evoking a wide range of emotional responses, from reverence, solace and even ecstasy, to fear, hostility and violence. This course takes as its laboratory the city of Madrid, a vibrant, modern city in the midst of dramatic cultural, political and economic changes. Over the course of three weeks, we will at once explore the place of objects in religious life and unearth the history of the city, present in churches, museums and in the streets.

Close reading of selected poems by T. S. Eliot, including The Long Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, and The Four Quartets, with a focus on authentic selfhood, time and history, and the question of the divine. OSPGEN 45: Lost in the Myths of Time: Landscape, Language and Identity

What ancient English topography, placenames, and landmarks reveal about culture, society, nation and identity a thousand years ago. Experience, first hand, early medieval landscapes of defense, governance, and communication, learning about medieval routes and villages, borders and material remains. Stay in Nottingham (to discover Robin Hood), Montgomery (for Offa¿s Dyke), and Cambridge (for cathedrals, fens, and Icknield Way); acquire GIS, mapping, and onomastic skills, before participating in behind-the-scenes visits to famous sites, museums, and libraries, including Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, and the British Museum, London.
