The Dirac delta, distributions, and generalized transforms. Convolutions and correlations and applications; probability distributions, sampling theory, filters, and analysis of linear systems. The discrete Fourier transform and the FFT algorithm. Multidimensional Fourier transform and use in imaging. Further applications to optics, crystallography. Themed units: disaster anime; politics of shojo; otakuology; keitai studies. Analysis of media texts and how age, gender, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class are represented. Social context in which popular culture is produced and consumed. Local field trips.

Overview of Japanese literature from the earliest times to the present, with an emphasis on works set in or around Kyôto. Examine the texts in relation to their historical context generally, with a secondary emphasis on how the backdrop of Kyôto plays a role in different historical works and different historical periods. In addition, touch on issues relevant to the texts and to Japanese history and culture, including nature, community, religion, nationalism, individualism, gender, family, and moral values.

Examination of any of the following topics, according to student interest: Japanese Poetry of any genre or period; Haiku in Japanese and/or English; Dramatic Manga; Travel Writing.
