China, Japan, and both Koreas. Healthcare economics as applied to East Asian health policy, including economic development, population aging, infectious disease outbreaks (SARS, avian flu), social health insurance, health service delivery, payment incentives, competition, workforce policy, pharmaceutical industry, and regulation. Emphasis is on analysis of visual design effects used in Japanese gardens. Topics include original intentions with Japanese gardens, design tenets from the two oldest Japanese gardening manuscripts, classical gardens of Kyoto, garden appreciation following introduction of Zen to the West, parallels between Japanese aesthetics and Gestalt school of perceptual psychology, evolutionary aspects of human visual perception and human aesthetic preference, modern neuroscience and art, neuroscience and landscape design, evolutionary interpretation of Japanese classical landscape design. Japanese language not required.

EASTASN 189K: Korea's Relations with Major Neighboring Countries and Its Growing Role on a Global Stage (EASTASN 289K)

Topics on Korea vary each year. Topics this year include South Korea's relations with the U.S., Japan, China, ASEAN and the EU. Focus is on South Korea's diplomatic practices during early 1990's to 2010 in dealing with pending issues with these countries and communities. In addition to required readings in English, supplemental basic readings in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese will be recommended.

EASTASN 390: Practicum Internship

On-the-job training under the guidance of experienced, on-site supervisors. Meets the requirements for curricular practical training for students on F-1 visas. Students submit a concise report detailing work activities, problems worked on, and key results. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: qualified offer of employment and consent of adviser.
