OSPMADRD 69: Introduction to Postwar and Contemporary Art
Pivotal figures and movements of artistic production in Europe and the United States from 1945 to the present organized around the major socio-political themes of the period, from the artistic response to the catastrophe of WWII; the Cold War; the emergence of the European Union; to recent debates on "austerity" measures in the wake of the global recession. Political and aesthetic status of the avant-garde in the present with emphasis on contemporary Europe. Topics: rise of mass media after the war; ethics of historical memory and commemoration; debate over engaged or committed art; art and the "Culture Industry"; art of 1968; reactions to American hegemony; globalization and contemporary art.
