OSPGEN 62: St. Petersburg and Russia: City, Empire, and Culture

Main themes of Russian history ¿ autocracy, empire, national tradition, European culture -- through the lens of three cities, St. Petersburg, Novgorod and Tallinn, Estonia. Contrast the architecture, culture and historical experience of St. Petersburg with traditional Russia, exemplified by the ancient town of Novgorod, and with Tallinn, a non-Russian capital city in the vast Russian empire.

OSPGEN 63: Bio-Cultural Diversity and Community-Based Conservation in Oaxaca

Interdisciplinary seminar emphasizing two major areas of study: biological sciences (ecology) and culture (the human dimensions of conservation and use of natural resources based on indigenous traditional knowledge). Challenges and opportunities of interacting with researchers and students from other cultures; analysis of the ways in which academic institutions and rural, indigenous institutions are, jointly, undertaking the challenge of sustainably managing biological resources. OSPGEN 75: Evolution of Life in Neotropical Forests of Ecuador

Experience life in two dramatically different types of Ecuadorian forests, exploring the people, creatures, and plants that live in the two areas. One is the Amazonian rain forest along the mighty Rio Napo. Here the hosts will be Kichwa (Quechua) people of the Sani commune north of the Napo and in Yasuni National Park south of the river. The other is cloud forest on the eastern and western slopes of the Andes, home of vast numbers of orchid, insect, and bird species and of the Santa Lucía commune people today and of the Yumbo people historically. Topics span exploring the ecological structures of the forests, contrasting the forest types, to social issues such as human life in the forest, sustainable living for indigenous people and visitors, and threats from oil development and climate change.

OSPGEN 134: Middle East Technology and Engineering

Two-week study trip to the Middle East accompanied by a Stanford professor and graduate student lead. Offered by the School of Engineering in partnership with the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP). First-hand insights into technology and engineering based businesses in these emerging economies. Participants will: 1) gain knowledge of a wide spectrum of technology-based companies in the focus country; 2) understand, in a comparative approach, how western companies localize to stay competitive; and 3) experience first-hand the social and environmental impact of these businesses. Prior to departure, students will go through a curriculum targeted at understanding the state of technology business in the Middle East in order to maximize the learning experience students will have on the ground.

OSPGEN 259: Community Health in Oaxaca

Continuation of MED 259. Close observation of clinicians at work in community health settings in Oaxaca and service with local community health organizations. Combination of classroom study and discussion with cultural immersion, language training, clinical shadowing, and community service. Topics include: Mexican healthcare system; cultural, socioeconomic and educational factors impacting health of Mexicans and Mexican immigrants to U.S.; Mexican cultural and health beliefs; Mexican migration as a multi-ethnic process. Prerequisite: Acceptance into program and successful completion of MED 259 (Spring quarter 2015)
