OSPGEN 47: Vienna 1900: Culture, Science and Politics

The turn of the twentieth century found the city of Vienna torn between tradition and modernity. This seminar charts the contributions of eminent writers, thinkers, composers and scientists, and investigates the impact Viennese thought and personalities continue to have on early twenty-first century thinking. The seminar explores the city of Vienna on the trail of eminent figures like Sigmund Freud, Karl Popper, Ludwig Wittenstein, Gustav Mahler, Gustav Klimt, and Arnold Schoenberg, to name a few. OSPGEN 48: Rio de Janeiro: A Cultural and Political Social History

On-the-ground experience in Rio de Janeiro. Focus on literary, historical, and political aspects of Rio de Janeiro, and on the changes the city is undergoing in preparation for its heightened presence on the world stage. From the vibrant highlights of music and dance to the gritty reality of life in the favelas, the course offers an immersion into the social, cultural, and racial dynamics of Brazil condensed in Rio de Janeiro's history. Introduction to conservation photography and the strategic use of visual communication in addressing issues concerning the environment and conservation. Basic digital photography and the theory and application of photographic techniques. Case studies of conservation issues examined through photographs and multimedia platforms including images, video, and audio. Lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, and field trips culminating in individual and group projects. Location: Costa Rica.

OSPGEN 50: Minority as Cultural Form in South Asia

The importance of minority in South Asia, both historically and in the present. From vantage points of visits to Delhi, the administrative capital of India, and Bombay/Mumbai, regarded as its financial hub, negotiate and analyze minority cultural and political formations in India. Of special interest: colonialism, nationalism, partition, the Emergency, the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, the rise of Hindu nationalism, the status of Muslim minorities, gender reform, anti-caste radicalism, labor movements, LGBT agitations. OSPGEN 51: Between Heaven and Earth: Exploring Sacred Space in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

Exploration of sacred and civic spaces in present-day Israel. Topics span antiquity to the present day: the significance of Jerusalem for Jews, Christians and Muslims; the development of the synagogue, the church and the mosque: Arab and other minorities in modern Israel; the religious dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and the emergence of secular Israeli spaces in Tel Aviv. Island biogeography including origins and distribution of flora and fauna. Effects of insularity. Concepts include: islands as model systems; endemicity; biodiversity hotspots; radiation and adaptation of species; exotics; extinction; miniaturization and gigantism; insularity; habitat loss. Additional topics: strategies for environmental maintenance and remediation, cultural routes and diversity among the Malagasy, history of biogeography, comparison with of island systems, implications for non-island environments. OSPGEN 53: Corals of Palau: Ecology, the Physical Environment, and Reefs at Risk

Science-based understanding of modern threats to coral reefs through coral reef ecology, biogeochemistry, and physics. Field-based understanding of the complex array of organisms, structures, and physical and biological processes that constitute a healthy coral reef system. Skills for measuring biological, physical, and chemical time series changes on a coral reef. Proposed policy and management solutions as an entry into systems analysis and Earth Systems type thinking. Extensive field work components on small boats and/or in the water. Management principles and practices through theatre production and project management for the World Stage Design 2013 exhibition and the Scenofest performance festival. OSPGEN 259: Community Health in Oaxaca

Continuation of MED 259. Close observation of clinicians at work in community health settings in Oaxaca and service with local community health organizations. Combination of classroom study and discussion with cultural immersion, language training, clinical shadowing, and community service. Topics include: Mexican healthcare system; cultural, socioeconomic and educational factors impacting health of Mexicans and Mexican immigrants to U.S.; Mexican cultural and health beliefs. Prerequisite: Acceptance into program and successful completion of MED 259
