The art, science, and culture of the creation, transmission and collection of valuable, useful and informative objects and texts before the twentieth century, and the associated theories, purposes, and methods for collecting `worldly' goods and other valuables. Means by which local academic practices engaged with global developments in the arts and sciences through examination of primarily early modern material and intellectual culture in and around Oxfordshire. Assessments of quality, meaning, usage, cultural significance and the reception of material ¿treasures¿ in the storage rooms, vaults, and on display in museums, galleries, and libraries.

Basic data and concepts of comparative politics applied to the contemporary Middle East and North African region. Key probing questions from a sociological and historical perspective, based on recent academic literature, fieldwork research and media reports: issue of state-building and welfare state; surviving authoritarian rule; role of political opposition and civil society; nature of political transitions; spread of social movements and uprisings in the Maghreb and the Mashrek; key role of Arab-Israeli conflict in transnational politics; Jihadism and terrorism and the threat of the Islamic State; the Rentier state; role of state and private armies.

OSPPARIS 68: France: Birthplace of Human Rights

How French society has negotiated ethnic, racial, and religious difference within the context of international human rights. Basic documents of human rights, including readings on the ideas behind human rights, as found in the political philosophy of Locke and Mill; centrality of the droits de l'homme, placed within historical context.; and the Dreyfus affair as a key moment in human rights discourse. Visits to the archives of the Bibliothèque Nationale, as well as other museums, to view textual, graphic and artistic representations of that period. Establishment of international human rights discourse that followed the Second World War, locating its emergence in the context of decolonization and new nationalisms; North African independence and the impact of immigration to France. US notions of "multiculturalism" and French "integration."
