Influence of epidemics on world history and specifically the infectious diseases that transformed Great Britain. Topics include: the Black Death, the end of middle ages and the reformation; the bubonic plague of 17th century London; cholera and the birth of epidemiologic sciences; tuberculosis and the rise of public health; plagues of the British Raj; epidemics, politics and political cartooning; epidemics of war; and the enormous British contribution to identification, prevention and treatment of epidemics from the discovery of smallpox vaccine to the discovery of penicillin.
